How Structured Writing Improves Readability and SEO/AIO

Internet searches continue to evolve as AI optimization (AIO) is more widely used by search engines. Marketing teams are beginning to understand how much of a role structure plays in advancing your webpage on search engines. AIO focuses on making content clear, authoritative, and concise for readers seeking AI-generated answers.

Breaking away from how traditional search engine optimization (SEO) focuses on list rankings on search engines, AIO focuses on having content cited as sources in AI’s search response. To use AIO to expand our content’s reach, we, as writers and marketers, must understand how AIO searches for and prioritizes content.

How Internet Searches Are Evolving

In 2024, Google introduced the use of AI Overviews (AIOs), where AI-generated answers appear at the top of Google searches without having to click a single link. AIOs are still early in the adoption stages.

As we enter 2026, many users report receiving erroneous answers from AIOs, and many businesses notice a decline in traffic from Google from these “zero-click” searches.

Even though readers are clicking fewer links, they remain skeptical of AIO search results. According to a recent survey, over 75% of readers are concerned about misinformation from AI-generated answers.

As writers, we need to work with AIO and SEO to ensure our content reaches Google AI-generated answers, expanding our brands’ reach. We must focus our efforts on becoming the source for AI overviews by providing concise and trustworthy content to boost visibility and draw readers to click onto our pages and read further.

Creating Search-Friendly Content – Why Structure Matters

Like humans, AI thrives on structure, authority, and readability when analyzing data for inclusion in its generated answers. Structure begins with your headline.

Your headline is the first thing your readers see, and it should reflect your article’s topic through primary keyword placement and a title that entices them to click. Titles should offer solutions or answer questions, but it is important to avoid clickbait that does not deliver on the promise.

Headings also play a vital role in giving your content structure, but also allow readers to jump to sections that apply to the information they are seeking. When someone is searching for answers like, “Is Michigan a no-fault state?” the AI program will look for sections that answer that question directly.

If your heading closely matches the prompt, it will more likely be used in AI-generated searches. Having headings mirror what you believe your audience may ask Google will help improve your reach.

Using heading hierarchies allows crawlers to understand and organize information more easily. By following a clear pattern for heading sequence, user readability and the crawler’s usability improve greatly.

Creating Content That is Readable for SEO and AIO

When your audience is looking for a solution or an answer to a question, long blocks of text can be a deterrent. AI systems also have a more challenging time scanning through long blocks of text to determine whether they answer the question prompted by the search.

Paragraphs should be no longer than 4 lines in length, and writing should be clear and easy for your reader to understand. Clear and concise writing that gets to the heart of the topic is more gratifying for the reader as it offers quicker solutions.

Tools that break up writing also make it simpler for AI programs to scan your content and pull solutions. Different techniques to use are:

  • Bulleted lists
  • Tables
  • Graphs
  • Numbers lists

Adding a frequently asked questions (FAQs) section can help increase SEO and AIO. Your questions should be relevant to your topic, like, “How do AIO systems pull information?” Your answer should be quick and easy to reach.

Answers should be direct and answer the question being asked directly. FAQs should be clearly marked in a logical manner so Google or ChatGPT can quickly navigate to find answers and backlink to your webpage.

How to Gain Trust With AIO and SEO Systems

Google and AI systems strive to reward content that is credible and has expertise on the subject matter. Ways to build credibility and authority with these systems are by following Google’s experience, expertise, authority, and trust (E-E-A-T) guidelines, which rate content based on quality.

This system favors the voice humans give to content writing by offering personal or real-life experience that relates back to the subject. Content is favored if it has an expert source that is recognized in their industry.

Some ways to fulfill E-E-A-T are by:

  • Updating content regularly
  • Including original content or case studies
  • Including backlinks to reputable websites
  • Using reputable sources and accurate information
  • Including author or company pages that include experience
  • Including credentials or first-hand experience

E-E-A-T, as it relates to SEO, has always favored well-structured, data-driven, and concise content, making it an indispensable tool for getting noticed by AI. Trust is the cornerstone for all of these systems; if AI can parse information from a trustworthy source, the more likely the information will feature in AI summaries.

SEO Is Not Dead, and AIO Is More Alive than Ever

For content writers and marketers alike, SEO is more important than ever. Increasing the amount of helpful content on websites from a credentialed or trusted source helps AI gather the information to create an overview of the topic.

Over time, we continue to look at statistics to see how AI overviews affect click-through rate on websites. By providing well-written and organized content on your website, you can extend your reach in AI overviews.

Like these systems, we continue to evolve and adapt as we learn how to better utilize them to our advantage.
